Advising Syllabus
Advising is a shared partnership between you and your advisor
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Understand Emporia State University degree requirements
- Understand and generate a degree plan (DegreeWorks)
- Identify and utilize campus resources
Advisor Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe, honest, unbiased atmosphere for the student to openly and honestly participate in the advising partnership
- Inform students of university regulations and major/degree and graduation requirements
- Recommend courses to minimize the time required for graduation, consistent with each student’s needs, interests, and abilities
- Encourage the student to develop and experience an inclusive holistic undergraduate experience through involvement, such as student organizations, study abroad, community service, research, intramurals, etc.
- Communicate procedures for dropping/adding courses, enrolling, and changing majors
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources
- Discuss career opportunities related to majors
- Discuss the process and implications for changing majors and dropping/adding classes
Advisee Responsibilities:
- Schedule and attend your required advising sessions
- Plan ahead and be prepared to discuss
- educational interests and goals
- educational plans (including course choices)
- academic concerns or questions
- Be courteous
- Arrive on time for your appointments
- Cancel or reschedule if necessary
- Don’t be a “no show”
- Communicate with your advisor throughout the semester
- Honestly share with your academic advisor any details regarding barriers to academic success, including outside commitments
- Accept responsibility for your decisions and actions
- Check your ESU email daily
- Develop and clarify your goals
- Keep a record of your academic progress and goals
- Ensure that official transcripts have been received from any other institutions in which you have attended
- Familiarize yourself with the academic calendar and be aware of deadline dates
- Seek help when needed and utilize appropriate campus resources
- Turn off cell phones and remove headphones and/or earbuds during advising meetings

- Appointments can be scheduled by calling 620-341-5421
- Advisors cannot make exceptions to university policy
- ESU email is the official communication the university will use to contact you
- Be professional when you email faculty and staff members
- clearly explain questions or requests
- include your name and student ID number
