Health, Physical Education + Recreation

Health, Physical Education + Recreation (HPER) prepares students to become qualified professionals in the areas of:

  • athletic training
  • coaching
  • health and human performance
  • physical education
  • sports leadership and recreation

We facilitate practical and action-based research and scholarly inquiry and provide cutting-edge and collaborative services in these areas.

Emporia State University is one of only 10 universities in the nation to have its coaching minor program accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education. Our athletic training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. The Health & Human Performance Program is endorsed by the National Strength & Conditioning Association Education Recognition Program for both its undergraduate Personal Training and Strength & Conditioning preparation programs.

ESU is a recognized “Gold Campus” by the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise is Medicine On Campus program. HPER faculty and students are committed to making physical activity and health a part of daily campus culture.

Graduate Degrees + Licensure

Emporia State University developed the first completely online master’s degree program in Health & Physical Education in the United States. The HPER department also offers a fully online health education licensure program for teachers already certified or licensed in other areas. The Master of Science in Athletic Training program provides students the opportunity to work closely with instructors and preceptors on campus in both classroom and clinical environments.
