About Health, Physical Education + Recreation

MISSION

The mission of Health, Physical Education, + Recreation (HPER) at Emporia State University is to prepare quality professionals in the area of athletic training, coaching, health, physical education, recreation, and sport leadership, facilitate practical and action-based research and scholarly inquiry, and provide cutting-edge and collaborative services in athletic training, health, physical education, recreation, sport leadership, and coaching. We embrace and promote lifelong opportunities for discovery, learning, and participation that contribute to healthy lifestyles.

VISION

The vision of Health, Physical Education + Recreation (HPER) at Emporia State University is to strive to be a nationally prominent department known for academic excellence, professional leadership, and public service.


Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is located in the HPER building (often pronounced 'hyper'), located off of Merchant Street between 18th Avenue and 15th Avenue, with its main entrance on the west side. The two-story concrete building, constructed in 1973, houses the HPER department, ESU Intercollegiate Athletics and recreation facilities. Extensive renovations were completed in 2016.

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education

This accreditation means the program has gone through a rigorous check by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education to make sure the program meets their standards and is qualified to teach students the programs they are offering.

Accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education

Emporia State University’s coaching education minor is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE).

Accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation

As a CAEP accredited institution, ESU's education programs - including physical and health education - are dedicated to advancing equity and excellence through evidence-based accreditation assuring quality and supporting continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.

Gym in Recreation Center

Building facilities include a five instructional gymnasiums, three racquetball/handball courts, a spin cycle room, a dance room, a 25-meter pool, an adaptive pool, and specialized rooms for combative activities. Also included are areas for dancing, physical therapy, weight conditioning, human performance study, and adaptive physical activity, as well as classrooms and offices.

Campus outdoor facilities include four tennis courts, a baseball field, a softball field, a soccer pitch and approximately forty acres of grass fields. Welch Stadium is located immediately south of the HPER Building. The stadium surrounds the varsity football field and an eight-lane polyurethane track. Various community facilities are also used for our classes.

The offices for HPER are located on the top floor.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK

A high level of physical stress (heart, lungs, muscles, bones, etc.) occurs with many of the activities incorporated into our classes. With this stress, is an inherent risk of injury. Such injury may include, but is not limited to, sprains, strains, burns, bruises, broken bones, tissue cuts, and the catastrophic. Students are advised of the potential for injury and should participate in any class in HPER only after they fully understand and accept the inherent risk factor. It is highly recommended that each student have their physical health evaluated by a physician. The instructor assumes no responsibility for evaluating medical qualifications.
