MS, Psychology - Educational Psychology Concentration (online program)
Discover how people learn in the MS Psychology concentration in educational psychology. In this program, you will engage with theories of learning, explore how to create motivating environments, and uncover all the different ways that we can enhance the learning process – no matter what the students are learning.
In this program, you will complete coursework in psychology, including motivation and cognitive psychology. Customize your experience by choosing elective coursework in subject-specific courses such as reading and math, sociology, coaching and more! We emphasize action research, and you will complete a project that examines how you can improve your practices through what you have learned.
Our 30-credit hour program is a perfect fit for working educators who want to improve their practices through a better understanding of how students learn. In addition, those interested in corporate training or other professions with significant teaching responsibilities will also benefit from the expanded view of learning that our program offers.
Our fully online program gives you the convenience of learning at your location while you experience mentoring from caring faculty and interactions with fellow students.
Educational Psychology vs. School Psychology
While the names of these two programs sound a lot alike, they are very different programs. Educational psychology is the study of how learning happens and how we can improve learning. Completion of this program does not lead to licensure or additional K-12 certification. Teachers often like to pursue a master’s in educational psychology to learn more about how students learn and how to create high-quality learning environments. Students seeking acceptance into the graduate degree program must first be admitted to the Graduate School of the university. First, Apply to ESU's Graduate School.
Candidates then seek admission to the program by completing the following:
*Submission of all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from regionally-accredited institutions.
*Three letters of recommendation from professionals who can comment on the applicant’s potential for completing advanced graduate studies. Additional letters (e.g., from friends or family members) which address issues the candidate believes relevant may also be submitted, but the application is not complete without the three letters from professionals that provide the information requested in the form.
*A statement of purpose or letter of intent
These items are all required: Applications are not considered complete and will not be reviewed until all of these elements have been received.
Application deadlines
Although applications are accepted year-round, in order to offer applicants assurance that an admissions decision and enrollment may begin on the desired schedule, applications should meet specified deadlines. Applications should be completed by February 1 to assure a program of study may begin during the fall semester, and October 1 for a program of study which begins during the spring semester. Materials arriving after those dates will be given due consideration, but an admissions decision may not be completed in time for enrollment during the desired semester.

Upon filling out the application, one has the choice to choose a concentration to supplement their Master's Degree. If one does not desire to choose a concentration, then leave that section blank on the application.

The following items must be provided/completed at the time of application submission through the Application Portal:

Official transcripts
Students must submit official bachelor’s degree transcripts containing at least 60 credit hours of coursework and final grades. Any additional transcripts from college credit accumulated after the bachelor’s degree MUST be submitted if you will be using these credits for transfer credit or for last 60 GPA. Transcripts are considered official when they arrive in the Graduate Office in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution or are received through a secure electronic transcript service to gradinfo@emporia.edu.

A grade point average of not less than 3.0 overall, or a 3.25 on the last 60 semester hours
Course prerequisites: A minimum of 15 semester hours of background courses in undergraduate psychology (not including introductory psychology), or the content of those courses completed via course equivalents as determined by core program faculty. This must include work in statistics, psychological testing, descriptive and/or experimental research methods, human development, learning theory (or a cognitive or educational psychology course equivalent to a learning theory course) and abnormal psychology. It is not uncommon that some prerequisite course work is missing for applicants; certain aspects may be met concurrently with MS in Psychology Program.
