School Leadership Decision Points
Decision Points
Decision Points are when it is determined if the pre-service teacher candidate is to continue in the teacher education program.
Decision Point 1
Candidates are admitted to secondary teacher education and the Phase I courses when the candidate meets all the criteria listed below prior to the start of the Phase I semester and are in their junior or senior year. Application deadlines are April 20 (for Fall) and November 20 (for Spring).
- Complete 100 hours of supervised child advocacy service
- Clear a criminal background check.
- Earn a final grade of a "C" or better in the following courses:
- ED/EL 220, Introduction to Teaching
- MA110, College Algebra (or equivalent)
- EG101, English Composition I
- EG102, English Composition II
- SP101, Public Speaking
- PY211, Developmental Psychology - Earn a GPA of at least 2.75 in the general education core courses
- Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.50.
- Have successfully completed 60 hours of college credit
- Obtain departmental approval (including, but not limited to, completion of a dispositional assessment by the content advisor and meeting GPA requirements)
- Complete the application process for Phase I
- Demonstrate English language writing and speaking proficiency
- Maintain a clear record of experiences with schools and minors
Decision Point 2
Candidates are admitted to Phase II (Student Teaching) their senior year when they meet all the criteria listed below:
- Earn a final grade of a “C” or better in EL 416, SD 550, ED 340, IT 360, ED 334, ED 333, and PY 334.
- Complete the student teaching application
- Obtain 5 evaluations from designated instructors
- Obtain departmental approval
- Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.50
- Be approved by the Admissions Committee
- Complete the Disclosure Statement
- Clear a criminal background check
- Self-assessment of dispositions (completed as part of Phase I) and dispositional assessments completed by Phase I faculty member and mentor teacher.
- Obtain health clearance
Decision Point 3
Candidates complete Student Teaching when they meet the criteria listed below:
- Earn a final grade of "C" or better in Student Teaching
- Successfully complete ED 431 Performance Assessment of Student Teachers
- Self-assessment of dispositions and dispositional assessments completed by education and academic supervisors and cooperating/mentor teacher(s).
Decision Point 4
Candidates will complete their degree and qualify for a conditional teaching license when they meet all the criteria listed below:
- Successfully complete the Teaching & Learning Portfolio (TLP) and all other Teachers College requirements
- Complete all required degree coursework & requirements
- Meet the minimum score on the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam
- Meet the minimum score on the content area exam(s)
- Complete the application process for licensure
