Vacation Time

Working at Emporia State University is awesome, but so is not working at ESU. Earn 22 days of paid vacation each year, and have fun not working.

You’ll earn 8 hours of vacation every two weeks to a maximum of 176 hours per year. If you don’t use all of your vacation, you can roll it over to the next year, until you reach a total maximum of 304 hours. We will pay you for up to 176 hours of vacation when you decide to leave the university.

Sick Leave

When you feel bad, we do too. That’s why our employees earn 12 sick days per year.

You’ll earn 3.7 hours of sick leave every two weeks, and there are no limits to how much you can accrue. When you retire from the university, we’ll pay you for some of your sick leave depending on how long you’ve worked here and how much sick leave you have saved.

Holidays

Enjoy time spent with family and friends during the holidays with our generous holiday schedule.

The state observes the following holidays:

• New Year’s Day
• Martin Luther King Jr. Day
• Memorial Day
• Independence Day
• Labor Day
• Veterans Day
• Thanksgiving
• Christmas Day

The Governor may also designate additional days as holidays, such as the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve. If you work in a 12-month position, you’ll also receive a discretionary holiday, meaning if you celebrate a holiday that the State of Kansas doesn’t, you can use your discretionary day to celebrate your holiday.

Parental Leave

When your family grows, it is a truly amazing experience. Don't miss a minute of it by taking up to 6 weeks of paid parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

Civic Duties and Social Responsibilities

Emporia State University encourages you to participate in your civic duties. Whether you’re serving on a jury, serving in the armed forces, or simply taking time to vote, we have policies to help you do it.

We know the people who are drawn to ESU’s vision of changing lives for the common good carry that vision into their personal lives as well. That’s why we provide paid leave for social services such as youth mentoring or donating blood.
