Honor Veterans
A flag ceremony featuring an ESU alum and retired soldier, a U.S. Army band and free admissions for active and retired military to the Hornet football game were just some of the events honoring veterans on Nov. 2, as Emporia State University helped kick off the All Veterans Tribute in Emporia, the Official Founding City of Veterans Day.
Postseason Play
For the second straight season Emporia State has secured the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The Hornets will play host to Northwest Missouri at 2 p.m. Friday, November 8 on the ESU Pitch.
Arts & Sciences
The senior nursing students, under the supervision of Kari Hess, in their clinical practicum this fall have educated more than 200 students at the Emporia elementary schools with their Healthy Eating and Nutrition program. The nursing students also screened more than 800 middle school and elementary students for combinations of height, weight, and hearing. This collaboration was a great opportunity for high impact learning for the ESU nursing students to perfect their skills as well as educate the public.
Congratulations to Blanca Herrada (BFA 2014, Art), who was featured on Flatland’s “Behind the Mise En Scene,” a profile series that puts artists in the Kansas City area, their creative process and their inspiration – which ranges from history to identity – into frame.
Dr. Penelope Speedie and Dr. Scott Wichael took 12 music students to Kansas State University to to participate in the West Central National Association of Teaching of Singing competition with over 400 singers. Congratulations to ESU’s four semifinalists — Kinsie Emery in Freshman Women, Ashlynne Bowles in Sophomore Women, Brenna Welch in Lower Division Music Theatre Women and Corey Mann in Junior Men.
Emporia State University Department of Nursing senior students, faculty Kari Hess, Tabatha Morgan and Anna Crabtree administered more than 200 influenza vaccines to ESU athletes. This collaboration between nursing, athletics and the student wellness center provided a learning opportunity for the senior nursing students to perfect their competency in intramuscular injections. Almost 500 high school students from 43 schools across the state of Kansas attended Math Day at ESU on October 23. Students competed in Algebra and Geometry individual events as well as team events in Algebra, Geometry and a catch-all event called Math Scramble. Schools were divided into either Division I or Division II based on their size, and medals were handed out to the top three teams and top five individuals of each event or division. Dr. Connie Schrock directed Math Day for one last time this year. Dr. Schrock has directed the program for 30 years and was honored for her many years of service during the morning program.
Dr. Martín Cuéllar, professor of piano, recently performed piano concerts in China at the Southwest University in Chongqing and at ZhiSheng Art Institute in Jinhua. In addition to his performance, he conducted piano master classes and workshops at these institutions.
Business
Dr. Mark Daly, Dr. M. Sajed Rahman, and Dr. Ed Bashaw presented to a group of students at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh last week. The team is working to further their agreement between our two business schools.
School of Business students who are a part of the Dean’s Leadership Class participated in Lockton University Day in Kansas City. Lockton is the world’s largest privately held, independent insurance broker.
174 items and $29 were collected as our BizHornet Beta Alpha Psi students went door to door in Emporia for Can the Bods. Thank you to our community for opening their pantries to help our students.
The Teachers College
Dr. Cate Crosby was elected co-chair of the Educational Policy and Politics Division of the Mid-Western Educational Researchers Association.
Dr. Ken Weaver received a presidential citation in Recognition of Significant Career Contributions to Preparing High School Teachers of Psychology from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association) at the society’s annual conference on teaching, October 19 in Denver, Colorado.
Christina (Wolfe) Gibson (BS, 2006, Health Promotion) was recently being promoted to associate manager of clinical operations at IQVIA.
Cheyenne Dains (BS, 2016, Health Promotion) is the Life Enrichment Coordinator for Town Village of Leawood (Kansas).
Students from Health, Physical Education, and Recreation won the Kansas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (KAHPERD) Quiz Bowl October 25 at the organization’s annual convention held at Pittsburg State University.
Congratulations to Dr. Judi Biggs (BSE 1981 Elementary Education), who was named vice president for student affairs at Catholic University.

Dr. Emily Vardell’s 801 class had a great weekend in Boise, Idaho, and took a tour of the Boise Public Library.
SLIM student Kristy Martin (Oregon MLS 2020) helped celebrate Archives Month by volunteering with the Society of California Archivists at the San Francisco Archives Crawl on Oct. 19.
Student Affairs
Emporia Police Chief Jerry Cook today announced the promotion to lieutenant of Don Schaefer, a 40-year veteran of the ESU Police department. Last week, Jerry dropped the “interim” title when Dr. Jim Williams, vice president for student affairs, presented him his police chief badge.
Athletics
Seven Emporia State runners earned cross country academic awards for returners. Five women and two men earned spots on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 or better at the certifying member institution.
Koch Center
Students in the Adam Smith Club hosted a viewing and discussion of “The Big Short” as part of their Liberty at the Movies series on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Presentations
Dr. Cate Crosby presented on community engagement, digital literacies, social justice, and ELs at the Mid-Western Educational Researchers Association Conference on October 17 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dr. Heather Caswell and Dr. Melissa Reed presented “Book by Book: Creating a Learning Space for Authenticity and Empathy” at the Kansas Association of English Teachers Annual Conference in Wichita on October 25.
Presentations by faculty members at the American Art Therapy Association conference in Kansas City October 31 through November 3:
- Dr. Gaelynn Wolf Bordonaro co-presented “Strangers in Town: A Documentary Film about Immigration Reflects Art in Action!” She also participated in four panel sessions dealing with art therapy education’s history and future, partners in art therapy, and its role in fine arts; in addition, she co-led a workshop on glass fusion at the conference dates.
- Libby Schmanke presented “The Legacy of Bob Ault, Art Therapy Pioneer.” She also led two sessions at the conference including one on supervision in substance abuse and self-portraiture.
Dr. Mark Stanbrough and Jason Dolan (ESU alum) presented "Where the Wildthings Run" at the Kansas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annual convention October 25 in Pittsburg.
Health & Human Performance students Autumn Adams and Rustin Hiebert presented their research at the Central States American College of Sports Medicine Conference in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in October.
MBA student Xutong Yang (co-author Dr. Jun Yu, Marketing) presented "The Different Attitudes and Behavior Towards Credit Products between American and Chinese College Students" in Academy of Business Fall 2019 Conference, Oct. 14-16, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. Daehyun Moon, Accounting, presented his paper, “Social Media Data for Audit Evidence” at the 2019 American Accounting Association Midwest Region Meeting, Oct. 17-19, Chicago, IL.
Political Science professor Dr. Michael Smith presented at the Great Plains Political Science Association annual conference in Maryville, Missouri, on October 26 and 27, 2019. Dr. Smith featured his paper on political science lessons learned from watching the Star Wars movies, as well as serving on a panel about the current impeachment inquiry and its possible impact on the 2020 presidential election.
Dr. Phil Kelly, Political Science professor, delivered his paper, “Geopolitics of Scarcity” for a panel session for the Mackinder Forum in Falls Church, Virginia, on October 27, 2019. Dr. Kelly’s paper will be published by a geopolitical institute in Rome, Italy.
Geography assistant professor Dr. Deborah Hann delivered “Commemorating through Cookbooks: A Recipe for Post-disaster Recover” at the Southwestern Area of the American Association of Geographers conference in conjunction with Dr. Elyse Zavar from University of North Texas.
Publications
Associate Professor Dr. Marian K. Riedy’s article, “Opening the Doors on Sue-and-Settle: A Model for Mediating Public Policy Disputes,” based on research she conducted while on sabbatical leave in New Zealand, was published in the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution (Vol. 34(2) Ohio St. J. on Disp. Resol. 247 (2019)). This publication is the official law journal of the American Bar Association’s Section on Dispute Resolution.
Dr. Marc Fusaro, School of Business associate dean, along with recent ESU alumna Franziska Willenbuecher (BSB 2018, Business Administration), recently published “Could Financial Trouble Be Avoided by Cooking at Home? An Analysis of Checking Account Records” in the International Journal of Services, Economics and Management (2019 Vol.10 No.3).
Dr. Jasmine Linabary, assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Theatre, recently published two written works. She co-wrote an article titled “Feminists activism in digital space: Postfeminist contradictions in #WhyIStayed” in New Media & Society, as well as published a book chapter, “Participatory approaches to monitoring and evaluating locally led peacebuilding in Ghana” in the book “Locally led peacebuilding: Global case studies.”
Kari Jarvis, assistant professor in the Department of Nursing, published her article “Swanson’s Theory of Caring: Application to the role of nursing education” in the International Journal of Human Caring.
Chair of the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Journalism, Dr. Kevin Rabas, has published a new book of poems titled “On Drums” (Woodley Press).
Conferences
Members of the ESU Chemistry department attended the Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Wichita, October 16-19, 2019. Dr. Jason Applegate, Dr. Andrea Luthi, and Dr. Eric Trump (in conjunction with student Derek Reese) presented research posters. ESU students Matthew Mers, Bradley Corbett, and Josephine Johnson also presented posters at the meeting.
ESU Forensic Science students and faculty attended the 2019 Midwestern Association for Forensic Scientists in Louisville, Kentucky on October 18. Students Mingjing Sun, Warren Menough, Alex Johnson, Kenadee Palmitier, and Ashley Haas presented their personal research projects at the conference.
Daniel Fragel and Grayson Graham attended the National Intramural & Recreational Sports Region IV conference. Daniel presented on successfully assessing programs to determine populations less represented, also touching on developing campus & community partnerships to Maximize growth. Grayson is serving as the student representative for the state of Kansas.
Nine ESU students, Kathy Landwehr (Associate Director of Student Advising Center) and James Keating (Academic Advisor, Student Advising Center) attended the annual Ad Astra Conference in Wichita, a conference specifically for First Generation College Students. Kathy did a General Session, “Using Your Strengths to Maximize Success.” James and student Sadie Trear presented a breakout session, “Using Your Strengths – Part II” for students who took the Gallup StrengthsFinder Assessment before attending the conference.
Kathy Landwehr and James Keating attended National Academic Advising Association annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky. This conference offers ideas and strategies for advisors to assist students in their success.
