Five educators from four U.S. states will be inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in June. Before that, they will visit Washington D.C.

Four high schools were filled with festive atmospheres as five students from three Kansas counties learned Thursday (Feb. 22, 2024) that they have full-ride scholarships to Emporia State University to pursue their career goals. Each of the five learned the news during assemblies at their high schools.

Seven members of the class of 2024 Kansas Master Teachers were named today (Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024).

Emporia State University is proud to introduce the SMaRT Kansas 21 (Science & Math Recruitment of Teachers in Kansas for the 21st Century) program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming teacher recruitment, preparation, and support in the state of Kansas. This innovative program is made possible by a legislative budget appropriation of $510,000 per year, demonstrating a strong commitment to the future of education in Kansas.

Students in Dr. Melissa Reed’s seventh-grade AP English class at Augusta Middle School USD 402 took their required reading further, creating activity guides that correspond with each of the 10 books nominated for the 2024 Bill Martin Jr. Picture Book Award.

Emporia State University students and faculty will learn from experts when the 2024 Kansas Teacher of the Year team visits campus on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Six of the 2024 Horizon Award winners earned their degrees from Emporia State University. The recipients were announced by the Kansas Department of Education recently. They will be honored at a ceremony during the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network State Education conference on Feb. 23 in Topeka.

Kansas Tourism has announced that The National Teachers Hall of Fame will receive one of their “big giant checks” as an Attraction Development Grant Award recipient for 2023. Carrie Doud, fiscal and grant manager of Kansas Tourism, will be in Emporia between 11 and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 16, to present the check for $16,000 to the staff and board of trustees. The grant is designed to enhance an existing state attraction, and the funding will be directed toward advertising and additions to the National Memorial to Fallen Educators.

Hispanic culture is celebrated at Emporia State University with a kickoff event Thursday, Sept. 14. Live music, dancing, food vendors and a jalapeno eating contest are all planned for the evening.

The Teachers College at Emporia State University named Dr. Damara Goff Paris the 2023-24 John E. King Endowed Professor.
