Area High School Juniors Learn About Eligibility for Jones Success Scholarships

Emporia State University hosted a first-ever event on April 15 specially designed for students from high schools in Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties, the area served by the Jones Foundation. These students are eligible for the Jones Success Scholarship program at Emporia State.

Throughout the day, students learned about the extensive stackable scholarship opportunities offered by Emporia State — with special focus on the Jones Success Scholarship program which provides students in Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties with up to $7,000 over the course of four years.

Emporia State University is serious about attacking the cost of higher education through its flat-rate tuition and stackable scholarships. For the 2024-25 academic year, 70% of undergraduate students were awarded one or more scholarships, significantly reducing the financial barriers to earning a degree.

Students can go to ESU’s centralized scholarship portal to apply for a wide range of scholarship opportunities by completing one simple form.

During the April 15 event, visiting students also toured the different ESU residence halls and learned about applying for financial aid, designing a degree program to match their passions and maximizing campus resources built around student success.

“The entire process of choosing an educational path after high school can seem so confusing to students,” said Jim Winslow, executive director of ESU Undergraduate Admissions. “We wanted to reach these students before their busy senior year and help them understand how all the different pieces work together for them to reach their goals.”

On exit surveys, more than half of the students listed scholarship as the most helpful information they received. Spending time on campus and interacting with faculty and staff was also helpful.

Wrote one participant: “I’m surprised that I was completely swayed into coming here after waiting to escape Emporia for so long.”

Students can still complete their application for Federal Financial Aid, apply, enroll and be eligible for scholarships for Fall 2025. Students can start the process by going to emporia.edu/apply.
