PAROC Hosts Women in STEM and Storytime Events to Engage Children with Science

Emporia State University’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center, or PAROC, is planning several upcoming science-themed events designed to be fun and educational. PAROC continues its monthly Science Saturdays and adds an evening option for Science Storytime targeted at children 7 and under.

A Science Saturday titled “Celebrating Women in STEM” is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event features a scavenger hunt, presentations by women in STEM and a display that showcases talented women making waves in STEM at ESU. The event is free and open to all ages. Registration is required, and caregivers must attend with children.

An engaging story and hands-on activities will introduce students to the five senses and how people and animals use them in the February Science Storytime events scheduled for Monday, Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. to noon, with a second session on Thursday, Feb. 22 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Science Storytime is limited to 10 children per session. Registration is required, and caregivers are required to attend.

All events are at PAROC, 601 E. 18th Ave., Emporia.

For those unable to attend the February events, more are scheduled throughout the spring semester.

Upcoming PAROC events are:

  • March 18, 11 a.m., and March 21, 6:30 p.m.: Science Story Time. All about butterflies and moths.
  • March 30, 10 a.m.: Science Saturday “Wonders of the Physical World”
  • April 15, 11 a.m., and April 18, 6:30 p.m.: Science Story Time. All about eggs!
  • May 11, 2 p.m.: Science Saturday. “Native Plant Sale” in partnership with Grassland Heritage Foundation and Native Lands Restoration Collaborative.
