Abigail Morse Hall Open to Public July 31

Abigail Morse Hall exterior

The Emporia community is invited to tour the renovated Abigail Morse Residence Hall on the Emporia State campus Saturday, July 31.

A short program will begin at 9 a.m. on the west side of Abigail Morse. Self-guided tours will begin immediately following the ribbon cutting, at approximately 9:30 a.m.

The first residence hall on the Emporia campus, Abigail opened in 1924 and was home to students through spring 2019 when it closed. Over the next year, the interior of the hall was gutted and previous additions on the north and south ends were removed.

The interior was fully remodeled with new additions added on both the north and south ends to echo successful design elements of Schallenkamp Hall. The team that planned the space, including architects, campus partners, students and ESU Residential Life staff put much work into using original finishes from “old” Abigail in the redesign. These touches include fronts of the old resident mailboxes as art, wall murals featuring old photos and handwritten notes from scrapbooks and nearly 100-year-old room doors as sides of the reception desk and a wall treatment.

The open house will end at 11 a.m., with the last tour starting at 10:30 a.m.
