Applications are due next week for the premedical fellowship offered by Emporia State University. The program, in its fourth year, now includes a summer clinical experience at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
The fellowship was created by Emporia State alumni and friends who are medical professionals. It is awarded to one incoming freshman per year. That student receives a $10,000 fellowship, paid as $2,500 for each of four academic year as long as they continue to meet academic requirements.
New for summer 2022 is a clinical experience created by physicians at Newman Regional Health. This is a paid internship offered between students’ sophomore and junior or junior and senior years.
Student interns are matched with a physician mentor and participate in 120 hours of shadowing. The shadowing is 20 hours per week broken into three segments of two weeks each. Students will be in clinic for two weeks, shadow in the hospital for two weeks and a specialty study for two weeks.
Each intern will complete a project that involves following a single patient from the beginning of their workshop through the end of their treatment plan — or the duration of their summer program if that happens first.
To be considered, applicants must:
- be an incoming ESU freshman,
- be a graduate of a Kansas high school, and
- have declared their intention to follow the pre-medical track for preparation for medical school (M.D. or D.O.)
The deadline for applications is Dec. 1, 2021.
One premed fellowship is awarded each academic year. The first four fellowships have been awarded to students from Wamego, Salina, Emporia and Derby.
