“Critical and Continuing Role of Library and Information Science Curriculum: Become an Effective University Teacher, Speaker, Presenter” is the theme for the 2015 fall Emporia State University (ESU), School of Library and Information Management, Ph.D. Research Forum. This event, Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., held at ESU-KC, Overland Park, Kansas, will feature Dr. Nicole A. Cooke, an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, The iSchool at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Cooke will share her expertise on university teaching and social justice in library and information science (LIS), and will facilitate seminar-style conversations with students and faculty. ESU faculty and students are invited.
Cooke is a 2012 graduate from Rutgers University with a Ph.D. in communication, information, and library studies where she was an American Library Association Spectrum Doctoral Fellow. She holds the MLS degree from Rutgers University, and a M.Ed. in Adult Education from Penn State. Cooke was an instruction librarian and tenured assistant professor at Montclair State University’s (New Jersey) Sprague Library. Named a Mover & Shaker in 2007 by Library Journal, Cooke is professionally active in American College and Research Libraries, Association of Library and Information Science Educators (ALISE), and several other professional library organizations.
Cooke’s many honors include the 2013 Recipient of the Norman Horrocks Leadership Award by ALISE, and the University of Illinois YWCA’s 2015 Leadership Award in Education in recognition of her work in social justice and higher education.
A statement from the YWCA described Cooke as “an excellent academic, mentor, and proponent for institutional diversity and social justice. Cooke has worked diligently to diversify the curriculum and create spaces of inclusion for people of color within [the] library and information sciences.”
Cooke’s research interests are in human information behavior, particularly in an online context; diversity and social justice in librarianship; and LIS education. As an award-winning scholar, university professor, and featured speaker at many national and international conferences including The iConference 2014, Berlin, Germany, and the CoLIS 2013 Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, Cooke’s knowledge and experiences will provide inspiration and advise about being an effective university teacher, speaker, and presenter.
