National Honor
Emporia State assistant coach Bryan Nardo has been selected to take part in the American Football Coaches Association 2019 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute. This year's class was chosen from a field of hundreds of applicants. Nardo just finished his seventh season at Emporia State, serving as the team's Defensive Coordinator while coaching the linebackers.

The ESU Hornet football team took care of business in Texas, defeating the Boll Weavils of University of Arkansas Monticello in the second annual Corsicana Bowl.ESU finished its season 8-4 with players setting records along the way:
- Quarterback Braxton Marstallhas the ESU record of 87 career touchdown passes; finished the season with 3,049 passing yards, the fifth 3,000-year passing season in team history; and he has 11,156 yards of total offense putting him second in the MIAA record books.
- Running back Landon Naultended his season with 1,008 yards, making him the first Hornet since Tyler Paul in 2003 to gain 1,000 yards in a single season.
- For the first time in team history, a player passed for 3,000 yards and another player ran for 1,000 yards in the same season.
International Honor
A composition for string quartet by Dr. Ramiro Miranda, assistant professor of music, is eatured in a documentary, “Voces de Barro.”The film tells the story of El Cantaro, an afterschool arts institute in Aregua, Paraguay, a small town of artists.
On a Roll
Congratulations to Glen Suppes who was named the 2019 Kansas Superintendent of the Yearlast month. Glen, superintendent of Smoky Valley schools, completed his district certification work at ESU’s The Teachers College. Glen is the third ESU alum in a row to be named Superintendent of the Year by the Kansas School Superintendents’ Association.
Arts & Sciences
Student workers in the Department of Physical Sciencescelebrated the season by creating a “chemis-tree” for the office.
Around 30 Emporia Middle School students gathered to hear Kansas State University Professor David Auckly present “Balloon Numbers” on November 27. During the discussion, he challenged the students to come up with the smallest number of balloons required to make a cube. (The answer is 4.) The Inspired by Mathprogram is directed by Dr. Qiang Shi of ESU and Laura Albertson and Ashley Burket of EMS.
Congratulations to the Emporia Symphony Orchestra, which won the Chamer of Commerce Award for its float in the Emporia Christmas Parade on November 27. Tonya Starr, treasurer of the Emporia Symphony League, designed and built the float.
Many thanks to Drs. Claudia Aguirre-Mendez, Marvin Harrell and Dwight Moore, who represented ESU at Science & Math Day at the Quapaw Native American Reservationin Oklahoma. Several ESU students — future science and math teachers — also attended to share activities and perform demonstrations with middle school and high school students.
Almost 30 Hispanic middle school students from across Kansas came to ESU on November 3 to participate in Si Se Puede, which included workshops in chemistry, physics, engineering, veterinary medicine and forensic science. Hispanic professionals and students from ESU and the Emporia community led the sessions. This was the 12th year the Department of Mathematics & Economics has held the event, which is directed by Dr. Betsy Yanik.

Congratulations to our campus Hult Prizecompetition winners. The winning team, “The Innovators,” now competes in regional finals in the spring. The team members are Bonnie Monahan, elementary education; Camila Ramos Ascarrunz, business management and political science; Aya Bouchank, master’s degree in instructional design and technology; and Ifeanyi Martin Okonkwo, master’s of business administration. Members of the runner up team, “American-Tunisian Team,” were Khalifa Ben Lazrek, undeclared; Austin Souphanh, information systems; Quinton Birmingham, physical science; and Imen Rajhi, undeclared.
The Teachers College
The Athletic Trainingprogram within the Department of Health, Physical Education, & Recreation hosted the 2018 Kansas Athletic Trainers’ Society Symposium at ESU on November 18. Nicole Blick and Amber Krehbiel, both juniors in the AT program, were among the presenters.
Diane Mangus of Health, Physical Education, & Recreation received a Kansas Association for Health - Physical Education - Recreation - Dance Appreciation Awardduring the recent KAHPERD convention held on ESU campus. This award recognized Mangus’ assistance in preparing for hosting the 2018 convention for over 500 attendees.
Ali Boughn (MS, Art Therapy, 2018) was the featured art therapist in the November 22 issue of the American Art Therapy Newsletter. Boughn works at the Mercy Child Advocacy Center in Sioux City, Iowa, providing art therapy to children and adolescents with posttraumatic stress symptoms.
ESU’s Art Therapyprogram is partnering with the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission. This endeavor’s goal is “to promote the role and facilitate the practice of art therapy in health care settings, including those in rural communities without previous arts-in-health experience.”
Camden Estrada, Elementary Education major, and Henry Weiner, Secondary Education major, were recognized as Teachers of Promiseat the 2019 Kansas Teacher of the Year awards banquet in Wichita on November 17.
Congratulations to alum Mitchell Drey who has joined Shawnee County Parks and Recreation as a recreation leader. Drey will supervise Crestview Community Center. He graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in recreation and leisure.

Congratulations to alumni whose publications were featured in the recent Oregon Library Association Quarterly.Jane Corry (Oregon MLS 1997) co-wrote “LIOLA: The Long and Winding Road.” Mark Richardson (Oregon MLS 2002) wrote "Stepping Up: Applying Situational Leadership Concepts to Public Library Work with Teens."
Current SLIM student Kristy Martin visited the California Historical Societyin San Francisco and was given a tour by Rachel Fellman (Oregon MLS 2018), who is the Project Archivist there.
Athletics
Emporia State Lady Hornet Tyra Jones was named the MIAA Women's Basketball Player of the Weekfor her efforts against Newman on December 1.
Emporia State senior quarterback Braxton Marstall has advanced to the national ballot and is one of nine finalists for the 2018 Harlon Hill Trophyas the Division II College Football Player of the Year. The winner will be announced December 14. Braxton, MIAA Offensive Player of the Year, also was named Conference Commissioners Association Second-Team All-Super Region 3.
After setting a school record for wins and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, the Emporia State women's soccer team had five players earn All-Central Region honorsfrom United Soccer Coaches — Tanna Benefiel, Ashley Lakin, Maria Walden, Jillian Patton and Shelby Keyes.
University Support Staff
University Support Staff Senate invites all USS employees to the Jingle & Mingle holiday party from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. December 7 in the Sauder Alumni Center atrium. The Senate will provide refreshments and holiday cheer.
